Coronado Loop

I know--it's been a long time since I've made an entry here.  I really have no excuse either since I'm currently unemployed.  Guess I just haven't been in the mood.  Spending way too much time doing things around the house (which is now coming together quite nicely), working out, looking for a job, or otherwise wasting time.

But, my time off has allowed me to discover something interesting.  Today Robin and I did the Coronado bike loop.  This is a route I used to do with the HIT team that takes you from downtown to Coronado where you then take the ferry back to downtown.  It's a generally nice route that takes you on everything from major streets to seemingly secret bike paths.  Here's the route we took:

(Note that I turned off the GPS while we were on the ferry, so it looks on the map like a straight line.  Had I realized what we were about to do, I probably would have left it on.)

The cool thing I discovered today is that the 2:30 ferry leaving from Coronado doesn't go directly to downtown.  Instead it makes a detour to pick up people from the North Island military base.  I've seen the aircraft carriers from across the bay while dining at Fish Market, but I'd certainly never been this close to them.  The whole process is pretty amazing because military ships move the water barricades out of the way for the ferry to come in.  Once inside the barricades, we traveled directly beside an active aircraft carrier and got to see everything going on.  Then after we exit, the military ships again put the barricades back in place.

This route is fun in general if you haven't done it before, but if you happen to get on the ferry that stops at North Island, you're in for an even better treat! :)  Lemme know if you want me to be your guide for this route sometime!
